Unbeaten Year 7 Rugby Run!

The annual rugby festival took place on Thursday at Reading Blue Coat School.

A highly anticipated event, our year 7 team have developed exponentially through the season, starting from an inexperienced group of boys to a well organised, determined and responsive machine. The team results have steadily improved as the year has gone on and the lads were desperate to prove themselves in a blow-out tournament at the end of the year.

Around 36 teams entered the draw and our first challenges were a group of unfamiliar teams; Reading Blue Coat B, Little Heath and Park House.

A slightly rusty draw 0-0 against Blue Coat in the bitter cold of the morning got the boys warmed up and refreshed their skills following a long period of not playing competitively. This result spurred the team on to a 4-3 victory over Park House with Ollie scoring a hat trick of tries and Tiago cleaning up with a game winner. The momentum continued agains a dogged Little Heath team and another 4-2 win for Bulmershe.

At lunch the scores were totted up and the teams moved into more competitive groups based on their results. Bulmershe drew the challenging group of Sandhurst, Forest and Maiden Erlegh B. We got warm in our tent (a godsend on such a cold day) and a hot chocolate picked up the energy levels before facing Sandhurst. A good battle from a team who had not played as many games as us in the first round and it hurt them as we pushed through a 3-0 victory.

A few games rest, watching the competition and some warmth in the tent gave us our first back to back games of the day. Forest were our big challenge, they had played a great day of rugby and we pushed through them with big tackles, great hands, strong team work and sheer determination. Another fantastic 3-0 win.

Finally, Maiden Erlegh stepped onto the pitch. Our boys feeling the cold and the long day but eager to finish the day unbeaten. Yet another 3-0 win! An unbeaten day of rugby against some very talented rugby teams. I think this was the high the team wanted to finish the season on and they truly deserved it after all of their hard work in training. No final standings but we are confident we were in the top tier of teams appearing today and relished any challenge put in front of us.

A huge thank you to Reading Blue Coat for hosting what was a great day of rugby. Thank you to all the staff in the PE department for training the lads, supporting them on the day at the festival and for supporting them throughout the season.

From myself, a huge thank you for a great season to Finn, Kamal, Max, Alex, Matthew, Harvey, Stephan, Oliver, Lawson, Tiago, Sean, Anton, Jerome, Sammy, Kacper, Harry, Aditya and Adam for all of your performances this season, I’ve had a great time working with you all! Let’s get back at it next year!
