Coding Challenge Day

On 30th June 2016, The Bulmershe Auditorium was invaded by well over 30 enthusiastic year 4 pupils from our local primary schools in Woodley. Their mission was to take part in the first ever Coding challenge day hosted by the school to promote cooperation amongst schools in the area and more importantly support and instil coding skills in children from an early age.

The event also marked the culmination of a series of coding workshops organised and hosted by the Computing dept at the school during the summer term. This challenge day provided an opportunity for the pupils to show the skills which they have developed during the course of the coding workshops.

Pupils used a range of programming techniques in Scratch programming software including loops, variables and IF statements to code their games. A variety of games were designed, coded and presented on the day. They ranged from pong, racing, space invaders, flying bird, maze game etc.

Pupils were rightly recognised for their efforts and participation on the day, with the winning duo going home with a brand new raspberry-pie computer programming device.

The event was ably supported by 13 of our student ‘digital ambassadors’, who have shown real passion and ability in computer programming. They mentored the children throughout the day and shared their own coding expertise with them. Special mention goes to the following students for their community service and outstanding contributions on the day. They include:
