Our Sixth Form Media students recently swapped the classroom for the professional world of broadcasting with a visit to Sky Studios in Elstree. This trip provided a fantastic opportunity for them to see the inner workings of the UK film and television industry and to understand the many career paths available within it.

Taking the Lead in Production

Before the trip, the students had been hard at work in school planning their own film pitches. Once they arrived at the state-of-the-art studios, it was time to turn those plans into reality. The group was split into three production teams, with each student taking ownership of a specific professional role.

It was great to see our students stepping into the shoes of directors, producers, camera operators, editors and stylists. Using professional-grade technology and working in a real studio environment gave them a genuine sense of the fast-paced nature of the industry. They learned that a successful production relies on every team member working together, and the focus they showed throughout the day was excellent.

The Magic of Elstree

A major highlight of the day was a guided tour of the wider Elstree site. As one of the most famous filming locations in the UK, it provided an inspiring backdrop for the visit. Our students were even treated to some exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the filming of Wicked, which was a real thrill for the group.

The tour was not just about the glamour of the screen; it was also a valuable lesson in the sheer scale of the industry. The students learnt about the huge variety of careers involved in a major production, from set design and lighting to post-production and marketing. For many, it opened their eyes to roles they had not previously considered but that perfectly match their skills and interests.

Preparing for the Future

At The Bulmershe School, we are committed to showing our students where their subjects can take them. This visit to Sky Studios allowed our Media students to see how the theory they learn in their lessons translates into a professional career.

Our students represented the school brilliantly, working with creativity and professionalism throughout the day. We are very grateful to the staff who organised the logistics to make this trip possible. It was a memorable day that has left our Media teams feeling inspired and ready to start their next practical projects back at school.
