Trips and Opportunities
At The Bulmershe School, we believe that some of the best lessons happen when students step outside the school gates. Whether it is watching professional theatre, a week's camping, or skiing in Italy, these experiences stay with students for a lifetime.
We want our students to be curious about the world. That is why we offer a huge range of trips and extracurricular activities designed to build confidence, independence, and a sense of adventure.
Seeing the World
We make sure there are plenty of chances for our students to travel and experience different cultures. Our bi-annual ski trip to La Thuile in Italy is always a highlight, offering students the chance to learn a new skill in a stunning mountain setting.
For our language learners, we run an annual Year 8 trip to Boulogne-sur-Mer in France. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to use their French in local shops and cafés before enjoying a day at the Bagatelle theme park. Our older students also visit the Lille Christmas market, which includes a fascinating stop at Nausicaá, Europe’s largest aquarium.
Adventure and Challenge
For those who love the great outdoors, our residential trips are a rite of passage. In Year 7, students take part in a Bushcraft camping week, while Year 8 students enjoy an adventure-filled week with Land and Wave.
Our Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) programme is also a real cornerstone of Bulmershe life. Each year, large numbers of students take part in expeditions where they learn to navigate, camp, and work as a team. It is a brilliant way to build resilience and create lifelong memories with friends.
Bringing Subjects to Life
We look for every opportunity to take learning out of the textbook and into the real world:
The Arts: Our students visit Kew Gardens for GCSE Art, Photography and Design, while English students travel to Stratford-upon-Avon to watch the Royal Shakespeare Company perform.
Media and Computing: We take tours of Sky Studios in Elstree and visit Bletchley Park, the historic home of British codebreaking.
Science: Year 11s attend Science Live to hear from speakers like Prof. Robert Winston and Prof. Brian Cox, while our Year 13 Biologists visit Oxford University’s Natural History Museum Labs for hands-on genetics experiments.
Film and Magic: Our Year 8s visit Warner Bros. Studios to study the incredible costume and set design of the Harry Potter movies.
Culture and Inspiration
Being so close to London and Oxford gives us incredible access to world-class culture. Our students regularly visit the West End and have seen productions including Hamilton, The Cursed Child and War Horse.
Music is also a huge part of our school. Our choir and musicians perform at events like the Music for Youth Festival and enjoy an annual visit to The Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.
We also want our students to look ahead to their future. We run regular visits to Reading and Oxford Universities to raise aspirations and show our students the many paths available to them after they leave us.
Why These Moments Matter
A school trip is more than just a day out. It is a chance for a student to discover a new passion, to overcome a fear, or to see a future career path they had not considered before. These opportunities build the "soft skills" that we value so much at Bulmershe: teamwork, communication, and a positive "can-do" attitude.
