Year 11 Explore the Frontiers of Discovery in Oxford
Back
This week, our Year 11 students travelled to Oxford for "Science Live", an annual event that has become a real highlight of our GCSE calendar. This trip offers our students a rare opportunity to hear directly from some of the most influential and respected scientists in the UK, moving beyond the classroom to see where their studies can take them.
A Line-Up of World-Class Experts
The speakers this year provided a fascinating look at the diversity of modern science. The group heard from Professor Jim Al-Khalili, who explored the theoretical possibilities of time travel and wormholes, and Professor Lord Robert Winston, who discussed the complex ethics surrounding stem cell research.
The variety of topics continued with Professor Suzie Imber explaining the high-stakes impact of solar flares on our technology and Dr Anna Ploszajski, who shared her research into the future of hydrogen cells. We also enjoyed a presentation from Professor Sophie Scott on the evolution of laughter, which provided a unique look at how biological science can explain our daily human behaviours.
Seeing Science in Action
One of the most valuable aspects of this trip is seeing that science is not just a collection of facts in a textbook. By having front-row seats to these lectures, our students could see the passion and curiosity that drive professional research.
The speakers were also very honest about their own career paths. Many shared that they didn't always have a clear plan at age sixteen, but instead followed their interests and embraced "happy accidents" along the way. This is a vital message for our Year 11s as they begin to think about their own next steps after their GCSEs.
Practical Tips for GCSE Success
To ensure the day was as practical as it was inspiring, the students also attended sessions led by an experienced GCSE examiner. These sessions focused on specific examination strategies and revision tips, giving the group extra tools to help them feel prepared and confident as they approach their final exams this summer.
Our students represented The Bulmershe School brilliantly throughout the day, showing great focus and asking thoughtful questions. It was a pleasure to see them so engaged with the "big ideas" of modern science, and we hope they returned to Woodley feeling inspired by what they heard.
