At The Bulmershe School, we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom. Our annual trips and outdoor adventures are designed to widen our students' views of the world, fostering independence and resilience in unfamiliar environments. During the February half term, 59 students from various year groups took part in our 2026 ski trip to the Aosta Valley in Italy, visiting the resort of La Thuile.

Developing Resilience on the Slopes

After a long journey to reach the Italian Alps, the group was met with heavy snowfall. While these conditions provided plenty of fresh powder, they also presented a genuine challenge for our skiers, particularly those new to the sport. It was a pleasure to see our students approach the mountain with such determination; rather than being deterred by the weather, they showed great resilience, supporting one another as their confidence and technical ability grew day by day.

Cultural Experiences and Team Building

A school trip is about more than just physical skill; it is about immersing oneself in a different culture and building bonds across year groups. The "après-ski" side of the week was a significant highlight, with students enjoying traditional Italian hospitality. From local pizza evenings to sampling authentic gelato and crêpes in the resort, these moments allowed the group to relax and reflect on their progress as a team.

One of the most memorable traditions of the trip is the "fancy dress run" held on the final Friday. The sight of our students skiing down the mountain in a variety of creative costumes brought a great deal of character to the resort and served as a light-hearted celebration of their hard work throughout the week.

Exceptional Feedback

At the end of the week, ski instructors presented each student with a certificate of achievement. We were particularly proud to receive feedback from the resort staff regarding the group's conduct. The instructors praised our students' effort, maturity and willingness to learn, noting that they were a credit to themselves and the school.

Opportunities like the La Thuile trip are a vital part of the Bulmershe experience, providing students with memories and skills, such as perseverance and adaptability, that will serve them well in all areas of their lives.
