At The Bulmershe School, our Technology department is committed to showing students how their classroom skills translate into world-class industries. This week, 100 of our Year 8 students travelled to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London to explore the "The Making of Harry Potter." The visit was designed to provide a deep dive into the technical artistry of film production, specifically focusing on set design, costume creation and the intricate process of bringing a literary world to life.

The Art of Costume Design

The day began with an exclusive backstage educational session led by the Studio’s own experts. Our students were given the rare opportunity to handle and examine actual costumes used in the film franchise. In a sensory exercise, they were asked to feel various fabrics hidden in bags to determine a character's traits, judging whether a garment belonged to someone rich or poor, young or old, or even "good" or "evil."

The studio staff explained the subtle details that often go unnoticed on screen. For instance, students learnt how Lord Voldemort’s cloak was designed to change shades as each of his Horcruxes was destroyed, and how Luna Lovegood’s Yule Ball outfit was meticulously constructed to resemble a Christmas tree. This session highlighted how designers use material and colour to tell a story without a single word of dialogue.

Exploring the Wizarding World

Following the workshop, students explored the vast museum, which houses thousands of original props and sets. This was a visual feast for our young designers, who walked through the Great Hall, peered into Dumbledore’s office and navigated the cobblestones of Diagon Alley. Moving through the Forbidden Forest, they came face-to-face with the giant spiders, seeing first-hand the scale of the animatronics and physical effects used in modern filmmaking.

The tour culminated at the breathtaking 1:24 scale model of Hogwarts Castle. The level of detail in the miniature, from the hand-painted shingles to the tiny flickering lights, demonstrated the incredible patience and skill required in 3D design and model making.

Inspiring Future Careers in Film

Beyond the magic of the sets, the curriculum focus was to demonstrate the sheer breadth of jobs available in the UK film industry. From concept artists and architects to seamstresses and engineers, the "room upon room" of film-making secrets showed students that a passion for 3D design can lead to a highly successful career. We hope this experience has inspired many of our Year 8s to consider Technology and 3D design as they begin to think about their GCSE options.
