Reflect, Re-engage and Rebuild
Back
At The Bulmershe School, we believe that a supportive and structured environment is essential for student wellbeing and academic success. Every school faces moments where students need a space to pause when their behaviour or choices fall below expectations. How a school manages these moments is vital. We are committed to an approach that combines high expectations with restorative care, ensuring that every young person is supported to learn from their mistakes.
To better reflect this philosophy, we have evolved our approach to internal exclusion. The space previously known as the Internal Exclusion Room (IER) has been officially renamed RESET. This change is not just about a new title; it represents our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and restorative school environment where students can rebuild positive routines.
What is the RESET Space?
The RESET room is a purposefully designed, calm environment within the school. It is not used merely as a place for quiet isolation, but rather as a productive space where students are given the opportunity to pause, reflect and successfully prepare to return to their mainstream lessons.
For parents navigating the secondary school transition, understanding how a school handles discipline and emotional regulation is incredibly important. We know that the transition to a large secondary school community can sometimes be overwhelming for young people. The RESET space acts as a safety net, ensuring that when things do go wrong, we have the internal workings and structures in place to help students get back on track without losing momentum in their education.
How the RESET Process Works
When a student spends time in the RESET room, they are not left to work on their own. Our dedicated pastoral staff work alongside them to guide them through a structured process. During their time in the space, pupils are supported to:
- Reflect on their recent behaviours and choices in an objective, calm manner
- Explore practical strategies for positive decision-making in the future
- Develop their own skills for self-regulation and emotional resilience
- Focus on the foundational social and academic skills that support success in school and beyond
By focusing on these core areas, we ensure that students do not just serve a sanction, but actively learn the behaviours needed to succeed. The ultimate goal is to ensure that pupils feel valued and supported while we simultaneously maintain the high standards of behaviour that our community expects. This balanced approach enables students to return to their regular classrooms feeling ready to learn, participate and succeed alongside their peers.
A Core Part of the Bulmershe Way
This restorative initiative links directly to our wider focus on student wellbeing and personal development. We understand that secondary school is a journey of growth and learning how to navigate challenges and take responsibility for one's actions is a vital part of that process. By investing time into helping students reset their focus, we are building the long-term resilience and emotional stability that will serve them well into their future careers.
