Politics impacts our lives every day, and in many different ways. How much funding schools, hospitals and local authorities receive, the laws we live by and our relationships with other countries.

In Year 12 students will study the role of Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet and how the UK is trying to improve participation in the political process. Students will also study core political ideas of Liberalism, Conservatism and Socialism as well as non-core political ideas such as anarchism, ecologism, feminism, multiculturalism and nationalism.

In Year 13 students will study a comparative unit: Politics in the USA, including the different branches of the US Government including Congress, the US presidency, the Supreme Court as well as civil rights and democracy and participation.

Course Content

• Component 1: UK Politics: Political Participation and Core Political Ideas.
• Component 2: UK Government: UK Government and Non-core political ideas.
• Component 3: Comparative Politics: USA.

Assessment

Each component is assessed through a two-hour written examination. Each paper is a third of your grade.

Entry Requirements Grade 4 in Maths and English
 

Progression

Politics A-Level is ideal for anyone wanting a career in journalism, law or the civil service as well as public relations, public affairs or the charity sector. Possessing an understanding of how decisions at the highest level are made and the different aspects of the UK government is vital.
