Media Students Take on Sky Studios Elstree
Back
At The Bulmershe School we believe that a rounded education happens both inside and outside the classroom. While academic theory provides the foundation, it is real-world experience that often sparks the ambition needed for life after Sixth Form. Recently, our Year 12 and 13 Media Studies students had the opportunity to put their learning into practice during a visit to the state-of-the-art Sky Studios Elstree.
Widening Horizons in the Film and TV Industry
Our goal is to ensure that every student at Bulmershe has the chance to widen their view of the world. For those interested in the creative arts, the UK’s booming film and television industry can often feel like a closed door. By visiting one of the newest and most advanced studio complexes in Europe, our students were able to see first-hand that these careers are not only exciting but entirely within their reach.
Sky Studios Elstree isn't just a set; it is a hub of innovation. During the visit, students were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities, including a look at the production background of major projects like Wicked, which was filmed on-site. This exposure is vital in helping students connect their current curriculum to the global media landscape.
Hands-on Experience: From Script to Screen
The core of the trip focused on the 'Sky Up' Academy experience, where students were challenged to function as a professional production crew. Having prepared 'film pitches' (sections of their own original movie ideas) before the trip, they were split into three teams to bring those ideas to life.
Each student stepped into a defined industry role:
- Directors and Producers: Managing the creative vision and team workflow.
- Camera Workers and Editors: Handling high-end technology to capture and refine footage.
- Stylists and Actors: Ensuring the visual narrative and performances were professional.
Working in these teams allowed our Media students to develop soft skills that are highly valued by employers: communication, time management under pressure, and technical problem-solving. By using industry-standard technology, they gained a practical understanding of how a film set operates, moving beyond the "how-to" of a textbook and into the "how-it-feels" of a career.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Careers
We want our students to leave Bulmershe not just with qualifications, but with a clear sense of purpose. Experiences like the Sky Studios trip demystify the professional world. Students learnt about the vast array of roles involved in the industry, from the technical precision of lighting and sound to the organisational demands of production management.
The feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive. They returned not only with a finished film pitch but with a fresh perspective on what they can achieve. We are committed to providing these types of honest, practical experiences that prepare our students for the diverse opportunities of the 21st-century workplace.
