We recently held our highly anticipated annual whole-school Sports Day - always a key fixture in our calendar, bringing everyone together to celebrate effort, teamwork and community spirit. It serves as a fantastic reminder of the supportive environment we foster here, helping our pupils build the confidence and resilience they need to thrive.

For families considering a secondary school in Woodley or Reading, this event highlights how we balance high achievement with a warm and nurturing community. We know that the transition from primary school can feel like a big step, but events like Sports Day show how quickly our younger pupils become a valued part of our vibrant school community.

Adapting to the Sunshine on the Field

With temperatures rising rapidly on the day, our focus was on keeping everyone safe while ensuring the competitive spirit remained high. Mr Hird worked tirelessly behind the scenes, producing multiple timetable plans to suit different weather contingencies. To cope with the heat, he made several sensible adjustments to condense the schedule. While this meant we had to pause our usual team games, the track and field events went ahead.

Students competed across a variety of events including the javelin, vortex, long jump, shot put and the track relays. We were extremely grateful to our staff members who brought in gazebos from home to set up vital shaded areas on the field. The support from the sidelines was fantastic, with students making handmade signs to cheer on their peers. A special mention must go to Miss Hudson and her tutor group, 7YM, who fully embraced the fun of the day with custom chants, face paint and choreographed cheer routines.

Celebrating Personal Progress and Team Effort

While the focus was very much on participation, the competition between tutor groups was close. In the Year 7 competition, form 7XU took first place with 709 points, closely followed by 7XE with 666 points. For Year 8, form 8XU claimed the top spot with 709 points, with 8XE securing second place with 666 points. In Year 9, 9XL triumphed with 664 points, just ahead of 9XE with 618 points. Finally, the Year 10 competition saw 10XB take first place with 636 points, with 10YE finishing as runners-up on 628 points.

Beyond the scores, the real success was the way our students supported each other. Whether they were running the final leg of a relay or helping a classmate stay hydrated, our pupils showed great responsibility and respect. Older students, including our Year 11 helpers, volunteered their time to work alongside staff, manage timers and tidy up the track at the end of the afternoon.

This event is a key part of our commitment to student wellbeing and extra-curricular opportunities. We believe that physical education is not just about competition; it is about learning how to work as a team, managing challenges and developing a healthy lifestyle. These experiences help students build practical life skills that support their growth inside and outside the classroom.
