It has been a particularly active week for our PE department, with students representing the school across two major local events. From the district athletics to Woodley Sports Week, our young people have spent the week developing their skills, supporting others and demonstrating the core values of our school. Events like these highlight our commitment to providing a breadth of extra-curricular opportunities that help students grow both inside and outside the classroom.

For families navigating the secondary school transition, seeing how Bulmershe students interact with the wider community offers an insight into the culture of our school. This week provided a perfect example of that culture in action, showcasing how we combine healthy competition with meaningful student leadership.

Determination on the Track at the Wokingham District Athletics

The week began with our boys team competing in the Wokingham District Athletics event. This competition is a major fixture in the local school calendar, offering athletes the chance to qualify to represent Wokingham at the upcoming Berkshire county finals.

Despite facing persistent wet weather throughout the day, our students maintained a positive attitude and achieved several notable individual successes across various track and field disciplines. More importantly, they looked out for one another from start to finish. Students spent their time between events encouraging their teammates and showing excellent sportsmanship towards competitors from rival schools. The PE department were pleased with the effort and determination on display, which reflected the grounded, respectful attitude we encourage in all our sports teams.

Inspiring the Next Generation: Woodley Schools Primary Sports Week

Alongside the athletics event, we also had the pleasure of hosting the annual Woodley Schools Primary Sports Week on our school grounds. Throughout the week, primary schools from across Woodley visited us to take part in a wide range of different sporting experiences, including hockey, volleyball, traditional races and inclusive Paralympic games.

An event of this scale requires careful organisation, and the PE department relied on the support of our student body. Over 100 of our students volunteered their time to act as official Sports Leaders, taking responsibility for running the activities and guiding the younger children. Even with the warm weather, our leaders maintained high energy levels and ensured the visiting pupils felt safe, included and happy.

The feedback from visiting primary school teachers was incredibly positive. Staff commented on the confidence and maturity of our leaders, noting how well they communicated with the younger children. The real measure of success, however, was seeing the confidence grow in the primary pupils, many of whom left the sessions asking when they could return to Bulmershe.

Leadership and Personal Growth within The Bulmershe School Community

The success of the primary sports week links directly to our wider approach to student wellbeing and personal development. We believe that leadership should not be reserved just for the final years of school. Instead, we offer a structured pathway of extra-curricular opportunities that allow students to take on responsibility from an early stage.

Our leadership programme is varied, ensuring that every student can find an area that suits their strengths:

  • Peer Mentors: These students play a vital role in our secondary school transition programme, welcoming Year 6 pupils and helping them settle into secondary school life.
  • Sports Leaders: Students assist with primary tournaments, referee matches and manage equipment during community sports events.
  • Student Council: Younger students can represent their peers in school development meetings.
  • Senior Leadership Team: In the Sixth Form, students can apply for the roles of Head Student, gaining practical experience in public speaking and project management.

These experiences are designed to build essential life skills such as communication, problem solving and teamwork. By learning to lead others, our students build their own self-esteem and learn the value of contributing to their local community.

Thank You to Our Team

We would like to say a significant well done to all the Sports Leaders who gave up their time to make this week run so smoothly. We also extend our thanks to the PE staff and primary school partners who organised the logistics behind the scenes.
