Identity, Integrity, and Independence
At The Bulmershe School, we believe that education extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom or the pages of a textbook. Our mission is to ensure that when our students leave us, they are not only academically successful but also resilient, informed and empathetic citizens. This Spring Term, our Personal Development (PD) programme is specifically designed to meet that goal by tackling the themes of identity, future planning and healthy relationships.
The Foundation: Identity and Aspiration
For our students in Year 7, the journey begins with "Personal Identity." In a world of social media and external pressures, we focus on self-esteem and personal values. By exploring the Equality Act 2010, students learn that respect is a right, not a privilege. We also hold vital discussions on challenging stereotypes and misogyny, ensuring our school remains a safe, inclusive environment for all.
As students move into Year 8 and Year 9, the focus shifts toward the horizon. We help students recognise the transferable skills, such as communication and problem-solving, which they are already building in their daily lessons. For Year 9 specifically, this is a pivotal term as they select their GCSE options. We aim to guide them to align their strengths and interests with their future aspirations, ensuring their choices open doors rather than close them.
The Transition: Respect and Resilience
In the upper school, the conversations become more nuanced. Year 10 are currently exploring "Consensual Relationships." This isn't just about biology; it’s about character. We discuss how ethical behaviour involves kindness, care and an awareness of power dynamics. By defining what healthy relationships look like, we empower our students to recognise and challenge unhealthy dynamics before they take root.
For Year 11, the focus is on "Decisions About Families and Grief." We recognise that life involves change: birth, death, and separation are universal experiences. By discussing these topics openly, we aim to remove the stigma surrounding bereavement and remind students that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Meanwhile, our Year 12 students are preparing for the "Big 18." From understanding legal rights to managing adult financial decisions, we are bridging the gap between school life and the independence of adulthood.
Our Approach: A Safe Space for Complex Conversations
Personal Development is an entitlement for every pupil at Bulmershe. Our teaching is designed to be interactive and participative. We don't just "deliver" information; we create safe spaces where students can critically evaluate complex scenarios, ask difficult questions, and develop the "strong character" traits - resilience, integrity, and kindness - that define our school community.
These sessions complement our wider curriculum, linking directly to British Values and cultural diversity. Whether it is through citizenship or PSHE, we are ensuring that our students feel confident in their rights and responsibilities.
How You Can Support at Home
The most impactful learning often happens when school and home work in partnership. We encourage you to talk to your child about their PD sessions this term. These conversations reinforce the messages of respect and safety we share at school.
If you have any questions about the curriculum or need guidance on how to navigate these topics at home, please reach out to your child’s tutor or Head of Year.
