Media Studies

Why study the media?

Every day we are presented with a huge range of varying messages and ideas in media texts from all platforms, so why not study these to gain an insight into not only how they are constructed, but also into the ways in which they manipulate and affect us as an audience?

Media Studies provides learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to view this increasingly important industry in a critical and analytical way, will encourage them to think more deeply about the construction of a text and the messages it is presenting, as well as providing them with the opportunity to design and create print, broadcast, and online products of their own.

In the subject, students will study a wide range of media products from a variety of time period, sources, and platforms so that they might gain a greater understating of the workings of the industry, but also an insight into the power that the Media has upon us as consumers.

In a world where we are surrounded an exposed to media products on a 24-hour basis, we believe it is best to prepare our students so that they might navigate this world more confidently, safely, and prepared.

Changing lives through shared experiences:

The Bulmershe Communications and Performing Arts Faculty firmly believes in the mantra of “Changing lives through shared experiences.” We believe that the arts are one of the few things that have the power of bond, shape and nourish us, no matter who we are, where we come from or what we believe. As a faculty, we endeavour to provide our student with experiences and memories that will stick with them forever and shape them on their learning journeys. Be it performing in a show, working collaboratively on a practical production, sharing a love of music, or choreographing their peers, students of the faculty will have the opportunity to express themselves in the way they see most fit with the support of not only our staff, but their peers too.

As part of this faculty, the Media Studies department aims to enrich student understanding and experiences through frequent debate, discussion, and analysis. We welcome and appreciate the diversity present in our classrooms and encourage students to share their unique perspectives and insights in an environment that is safe, respectful, and tolerant so that all may benefit, students and teacher alike, from these shared experiences.
