Academic Excellence at The Bulmershe Sixth Form

Why Choose Bulmershe Sixth Form?
The recent Sixth Form Open Evening saw a record turnout, confirming The Bulmershe School's reputation as a leading choice for Post-16 education in the Reading and Wokingham areas. We are immensely proud of our academic achievements and the supportive environment we have cultivated, which consistently delivers exceptional student outcomes.
Bulmershe Sixth Form offers a unique blend of academic rigour and tailored pastoral support, ensuring students are challenged to achieve their very best while feeling fully cared for and guided towards their future aspirations.
Proven Academic Excellence
Our focus on personalised learning translates directly into high achievement, which compares extremely favourably against national figures for A-levels taken in Summer 2025:
- 29 per cent of all grades awarded were A* to A.
- 26 per cent of students achieved AAB+ grades, significantly above the national average of 17 per cent.
These results place us firmly among the top providers in the area. Our Sixth Form maintains a busy, vibrant atmosphere with over 300 students, including a growing number of external applicants, who are drawn to our clear commitment to excellence.
Flexible Pathways and Specialist Support
One of our greatest strengths is the flexibility of our course offer. Unlike many colleges and Sixth Forms, we allow students to study a mix of A-level and Vocational Level 3 courses. This means students can tailor their pathway to suit their strengths and career goals, studying up to four subjects. Vocational courses are equivalent to one A-level and are typically more coursework-based.
Beyond the classroom, we provide outstanding UCAS and Destination support:
- Specialised support is offered for competitive pathways, including Oxbridge, Medicine and Veterinary courses.
- An in-house Careers Advisor provides tailored and individualised guidance for all pathways, connecting students to the real world of work.
- Enrichment includes link work, mentoring, student leadership roles and opportunities to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and DofE Gold.
Fostering Independence in a Supportive Community
We believe in fostering independence while ensuring responsibility. Our environment provides a college-like feel with all the support, drive and care of a school setting.
Dedicated Space: Sixth Form students have exclusive access to a Sixth Form only café, a large computer room and an additional silent study room. We are currently working on Phase 2 development to further enhance these facilities.
Structured Freedom: Year 12 students can leave the site from 1:20pm each day if they have finished their timetabled lessons, and Year 13 students are given a ‘free access pass’ to come and go around their timetable. Our system strikes a careful balance, ensuring students can manage their independent study time effectively while still benefiting from structured support, including compulsory tutor time.
Entry Requirements and Application
All prospective students need to gain the base requirement of five 4–9 grades, including English and Maths, at GCSE to join the Bulmershe Sixth Form. Please note that most subjects, especially A-levels, have specific grade requirements higher than a Grade 4. We encourage all applicants to fully understand the specific grade requirements for their chosen subjects before applying. You can find all the specific details on page 11 of our Sixth Form Prospectus
The application window is now open. Interested students, both internal and external, must complete the application form before the deadline on 18th December to ensure full consideration for entry in September 2026.
